What the drive is like

Drafted from the route's computed data on September 27, 2026 and reviewed against the route summary card. Read our methodology.

You leave Málaga via the A-45, climbing quickly out of the coastal heat toward the arid inland plateaus of Andalusia before swinging onto the A-92. The drive is characterized by the rolling hills of the Spanish interior rather than intense mountain passes, so even with the peak elevation reaching nearly 600 meters, you will not encounter winter snow risks here. Keep a steady pace on the A-92 as it connects you toward the border, where the landscape shifts from vast olive groves to the flatter, coastal terrain leading toward the Guadiana River.

Crossing the border at the Guadiana International Bridge is seamless, but the transition into Portugal on the A-22 requires a shift in your attention. While the motorway limits are identical at 120 km/h, the Portuguese A-22 relies on an electronic toll system rather than traditional ticket gates. Ensure you have registered your payment method if you are driving a foreign-plated car, as the sensors overhead track your journey automatically. The tarmac remains excellent, but the light changes as you approach the Atlantic coast, often bringing a brisk breeze that can rattle a high-sided vehicle.

Fuel pricing is notably more favorable on the Spanish side of the border, so top up your tank in the outskirts of Seville or near the final Spanish border towns to avoid the premium you will find at Portuguese motorway service stations. While there are no vignettes to purchase for either country, remain alert for the varying signage as you drop down into the Algarve. The final leg into Albufeira is straightforward, but watch for sudden traffic swells during the summer months when the coastal population surges.

Trip plan

How to think about the drive: one day, split, or overnight.

Long day — start early

Doable in one day but it is a full day behind the wheel. Start before 9am, plan one proper lunch stop, keep the driver rested.

439 km

Key moves

Things to know before you set off — borders, sides of the road, tolls.

Cross-border drive · ES → PT

You'll leave one country and enter another on this trip. Keep your ID close, even inside Schengen, and check current border-control status before you go.

Tolls on motorways in ES / PT

Budget for motorway tolls — France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal charge per-km, Croatia and Greece by section. Contactless cards work almost everywhere; have one loaded.

Must-know before you go

The things a driver from another country wouldn't think to ask about — fines, stickers, payment cards, opening hours.

City access & emission zones

Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla now run ZBE low-emission zones

Must know

Spain's Zonas de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE) cover central Madrid (24/7), Barcelona inside the Rondes (weekdays 7:00–20:00), Sevilla, Valencia and a growing list. Foreign plates need to register at the city portal in advance — your Euro emission class determines whether you get in. Without registration, cameras log entry and the fine reaches your home address.

Tolls, vignettes & road payment

A22 Algarve and ex-SCUT roads — electronic only

Must know

Portugal has two toll systems. Most autoestradas use a normal ticket-and-pay barrier. But the A22 (Algarve), A23, A24, A25 and A28 are "ex-SCUT" routes with no booths — only overhead gantries that read your plate. Without a Via Verde transponder or pre-registration, you have 5 days to pay at a CTT post office, or the fine reaches your home address. Easiest fix: rent a Via Verde Visitors transponder (€6/week) at the airport or border.

Official source

Most Spanish tolls were abolished in 2024

Tip

The AP-1, AP-7 (Bilbao stretch) and most of the Mediterranean coast highways are now toll-free. A handful remain: AP-9 (Galicia), AP-66 (León–Asturias), Catalonia's C-32/C-16 tunnel approach. Spain is no longer a high-toll country for cars — your fuel + a few specific bridge fees is the realistic budget.

Fuel stations

Off-motorway stations close late evening

Tip

Spanish provincial fuel stations often close 22:00–07:00, especially in the south. Motorway services (Cepsa, Repsol on the autovía) run 24/7. If you're routing through an Andalusian backroad, fuel before sunset and don't bank on a small-town pump.

Contactless cards work at virtually every motorway pump

Tip

Major brand stations (Shell, Total, BP, Repsol, Cepsa, OMV, Eni, Esso) take Visa and Mastercard contactless without an issue. American Express and Diners are spotty south of the Alps. A €100 pre-authorisation hold is normal — it releases within 5 days. Carry €50 cash for the rare independent station.

Rules, fees, and thresholds change. Always verify against the official source the day before you drive — this page is a checklist, not a legal reference.

Frequently asked

Do I need a vignette for Spain or Portugal?

No, neither country uses a vignette system. Both countries use distance-based tolls on their major motorways, which are paid at booths in Spain or via electronic gantry systems in Portugal.

Are there any mountain passes to worry about?

No, despite the elevation changes, the route through Andalusia does not involve high-altitude mountain passes and remains safe to drive year-round.

Where should I buy fuel?

Fuel is generally cheaper in Spain than in Portugal, so it is best to fill your tank before crossing the border into the Algarve.
