As you head north toward Messina, the A18 transforms into a sequence of dramatic tunnels and viaducts carved into the mountainous terrain that meets the sea. This is a distance-based toll road, so make sure to take your ticket upon entry and keep it accessible for the automated gates at the end of the line.
