You'll pick up the A6 autoroute heading north from Lyon, a familiar French motorway experience. After about 300km, you'll merge onto the A31 towards Dijon. Keep an eye out for the changes as you transition from French autoroute tolls, often pay-as-you-go, to the UK's M6 motorway. The route takes you onto the A5 briefly, then the A26 towards Calais, known as the 'Autoroute des Anglais' for obvious reasons. This stretch is generally fast and direct, leading you to the Channel Tunnel or ferry port. Be aware that fuel prices can fluctuate significantly between France and the UK. The A4 will bring you closer to the coast before heading north. After crossing the Channel, you'll join the UK's M6 motorway. This is the backbone of the route north, and you'll be driving on the left from this point onwards. Town names switch language across the border

The Fourvière tunnel is the bottleneck

A6/A7 traffic through Lyon converges into the Tunnel de Fourvière — 1.8 km, two lanes each direction, no overtaking. Friday afternoon and Sunday evening it backs up onto the motorway by 30+ minutes. The "TEO" (Tronçon Est de l'Ouest) ring road skips it for €2.50 — worth taking if you're bypassing the city.

Smaller stations close on Sundays
TipMotorway service areas (aires) run 24/7 with a fuel-price premium of about €0.15/L. Off-motorway stations in towns under 20k people often close Sunday afternoons and overnight Mon–Sat. If you're fuelling on a Sunday route, plan around motorway stops — supermarket pumps (Carrefour, E.Leclerc) are your cheapest option but typically 9:00–12:30 / 14:30–19:00 on a Sunday, where open at all.
